Gay Games V - Friendship '98
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Some estimates said a quarter of a million visitors from all over the world attended the first Gay Games in Europe during August 1998. The City of Amsterdam welcomed participants like no other host — the yellow flags with the Gay Games V tulip-and-triangle logo were everywhere. Out of 13,038 registered participants, 11,949 athletes contested 29 official and 4 demonstration sports. Of the 1,089 participants in the cultural festival, 850 were in the choral program. Women made up 42 percent of all participants, the first time that had happened since Gay Games I.
